Amish Country Poor Man’s Hamburger Steaks

Sometimes they can overcook and become dry, or be undercooked and too pink on the inside.

Cooking hamburger steaks in the oven takes care of that problem. They always come out perfectly cooked.

This recipe is also a great alternative to the usual bread and patty hamburger. It is also called “poor man’s steak”, although it lacks nothing in the flavor department.

Making hamburger steaks with cream of mushroom soup gives them a delicious and earthy flavor that everyone will love.

What To Put In Hamburger Steaks?

If you want to up the flavor of your hamburgers a notch, you can add chopped jalapeno peppers, chopped tomatoes, onions, or even bell peppers to the meat mixture.

I would even use a bit of Parmesan cheese on top and let it melt for a bit in the oven.

How to cook hamburger steak in the oven?

If you don’t have a cast-iron skillet, you can brown your hamburger patties in a nonstick skillet, transfer them to a casserole or baking dish, pour your gravy on top, cover the dish with foil and bake the same amount of time.

I just find that doing it all in the cast iron skillet not only saves me time but gives me fewer dishes to wash.

What sides go with hamburger steaks?

I like to serve my steaks with a side of rice, so I can mix it with all the delicious gravy.

I also like to serve it with steamed veggies to make a complete and full meal. You could also do it with a side salad and some butter pan-fried potatoes.

Baking tips:

  1. Shape your patties all the same size to ensure they cook properly and not have some overcooked and other undercooked.
  2. I like to take the foil off for the last 5 minutes of cooking to let the gravy thicken a bit more and caramelize on top of the patties.
  3. Be sure to crush your saltines well as not to have big chunks inside the patties
  4. Do not forget to add salt and pepper to the meat mixture. The meat needs a healthy amount of salt to be flavorful.

My hubby wanted this for breakfast the next morning, it was that good! I did add a little Monterey Steak seasoning to the ground meat as we love it’s flavor. The only change I would make is add some beef broth to the gravy – just so there is more of it for the mashed potatoes! I made this in a Dutch oven and wished it had made more gravy – a lot of the prepped gravy had cooked down. Otherwise, this recipe is going in my recipe file!

A wonderful recipe that served me well several times so far. It’s the recipe I have looked for a long time. My mom called it scalloped hamburgers, so I spent forever trying to find the recipe! Thanks for this!
